As a golf instructor, I am sincerely interested in helping my players improve. When I work with a golfer, I continually strive for two things:I want my students to play and score better golf. I want my students to enjoy the game.Teachers need to tailor instruction to the student's needs, desires, goals, and talent level. It is important to be honest with the student and help them properly evaluate their game, goals, and objectives.I will always attempt to teach only what I know to be true and will continue learning all aspects of teaching and playing golf.Tim Hobby, 2011 Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year, U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion, Masters and U.S. Open participant, and former Baylor University Head Golf Coach, is Director of Golf Instruction at The Club at Sonterra in San Antonio, Texas. The private country club includes two 18-hole championship golf courses, clubhouse and member's lounge, tennis facility with 25 tennis courts, a swimming pool and fitness center.

A native Texan, Tim Hobby has become one of the most sought after teachers in South Texas. Throughout his golfing career, Tim has been mentored by some of the best instructors in the game. Names like Dick Harmon, Mike Adams, Jim Murphy, Jim Flick and Hank Haney are just a few of the teachers that have helped shape Tim's philosophy of teaching.

Led team to six straight NCAA regional appearances and the top 20 NCAA National Championship in 2002.

Resurrected the Mens program from a national ranking of 130 to a consistent top 30 program.

In the News Feature Story: Tim Hobby... Did you know? Greater San Antonio Amateur Championships, Volume 1, Issue 1, January 1, 2012
On a flight from Houston to Augusta, Georgia, Tim Hobby knew he was headed to one of the most storied and revered sites in all of golf. During the flight Hobby closed his eyes as thoughts started running thru his head, How am I going to play the par-3, 12th hole? Should I try to hit the par-5, 15th in two or play it safe and lay up?Hobby had earned the trip to the Masters by winning the prestigious 1989 U.S. Public Links Championship at Cog Hill Golf Club in Chicago. One of the top amateur golf events in the world, the champion is extended an invitation to play at The Masters Tournament the following year.The anxiety of playing in The Masters had been building since he won the Public Links Championship in July, but this was January 1990 and the senior at Baylor was taking advantage of the Christmas break to get in some practice at Augusta National a golf course he had only seen on television.He had been playing rounds at Augusta National over and over in his head for months so he thought he might know what to expect when he stepped onto the first tee.Just after his flight landed in Augusta and long before he got to the first tee, things started happening that he could never have anticipated.Walking toward the baggage claim area he sees a small man in a black suit holding up a sign -Tim Hobby-. While he tries to digest the attention he is getting he soon sees his luggage and golf clubs being loaded into the trunk of a stretch limo. A short ride later and with eyes wide open, he knows the limo has just turned onto Magnolia Lane the famous entrance to the Augusta National Golf Club. He knew it was Magnolia Lane from all the years of watching the Masters broadcast sitting next to his dad back in Alvin, Texas. Soon, two well- dressed gentlemen are there to greet the limo and as the young nervous player from south Texas steps from the car he hears, You must be Tim Hobby. The young player knew when he boarded his flight earlier that morning that his mission was to get in as many practice rounds as possible in the next four days, but at that moment he was frozen in an instant flash that held him paralyzed on golfs greatest stage. The golf shop had arranged for a caddie and after changing clothes, Hobby was ready to play as many holes as daylight would allow. One more thing, Hobby noted as he turned to the head pro, I dont have a car and I need to find a ride to the Holiday Inn after I finish. The pro reached into his pocket and tossed some keys toward Hobby who caught them as the pro pointed to his new Mercedes. Hobby who wasnt old enough to even rent a car now found himself in the parking lot at Augusta National packing his luggage in the trunk of the Mercedes- his car for the week. So now with details behind him Hobby was ready to go play some golf, but now there was still one more question that came to the young player, What am I doing here? This has to be a dream.A few short years ago Tim Hobby may well have been dreaming, but it was a dream of hitting a jump shot to win a trip to the Final-Four. During his senior year at Alvin High School he had averaged 24 points for the basketball team and was also recognized as one the top golfers in the Houston area, He found himself with scholarship offers from nearly every school in the Southwest Conference, some offering him both golf and basketball. With his roots in the junior program of the Houston Golf Association Hobby was very familiar with the dynasty that had been created at the University of Houston by the likes of Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, John Mahaffey and Bill Rogers. The golf team at UH had won 16 NCAA team championships and was recognized as the best in the country. After some touch- and- go moments with other big-name schools, he signed a full scholarship offer to play golf at Houston. When he showed up that first year to practice he remembers seeing so many good players on the tee line that he thought there might be enough good players here to field at least three championship teams. Even with his great talent he knew it would be tough to break into the top five with so many great upper classmen playing ahead of him. But, there was no quit in Tim Hobby. The competition made him work even harder on his game and especially his physical conditioning.For Hobby, physical training meant he would spend his late afternoons and some evenings on the basketball court at UH looking for a pick-up game. And there was no lack of talent on the hardwood of UH those days with the echoes of Phi-Slama-Jama still in the building. One night after a tough game, Lyndon Rose, a 1982 draft choice of the Los Angeles Lakers and a former player at Houston, told Hobby, Man, you got some game. You should be playing for our basketball team. Rose, a former co-captain of the Phi-Slama-Jama era went to coach Guy Lewis to tell him about Hobby. Lewis noted , Oh, I know all about Tim Hobby. I tried to recruit him out of high school, but he wanted to play golf. Lewis had a lot of respect for Roses opinion, after all Rose was one of the best players to ever wear a Cougar uniform, so he agreed to talk to Hobby.Guy Lewis held the offer in front of Hobby and before the basketball season started that year, the athletic department and the coaches had agreed to transfer his scholarship from golf to basketball. The son of a high school basketball coach, he was averaging about 20 minutes of playing time as a freshman. Not bad for a guy who came to Houston on a golf scholarship.His sophomore year held the promise of delivering something better for Hobbys game on the hardwood. That year the NCAA added the three-point line and that was the strongest part of his game. He was noted for his long range shooting. In a game against SMU that year he hit nine, 3-pointers and a week later against TCU he buried seven more 3-point bombs. His sophomore year he averaged shooting nearly 50% from the arc, a shooting percentage that may still stand in the old Southwest Conference record book.At the end of that season the players learned that Guy Lewis, the coach who had put all the championship banners in the rafters, would not be returning to coach and that Pat Foster, his replacement, would be meeting with the team. When a big time college program goes thru a coaching change it means a lot of things change. Pat Foster brought in a new team of assistants and a group of new players as well. With so much turmoil in the locker room, the team with which Hobby had become so familiar started to come apart. He didnt know Foster and Foster didnt know Tim Hobby. So now a decision that would take Hobby back to the world of golf was in the wind. And by now, he was starting to miss competitive golf.From a standout player who had so many golf coaches after him out of high school he now was just hoping one of those coaches would remember him and find a place for him to play. Hobbys best friend from the days of junior golf in Houston was Lee Hartman who had signed two years earlier with Baylor. After a phone call to Hartman and a quick road trip to Waco, Hobby met with coaches and let them know he was interested in transferring. Things worked out for Hobby and when the NCAA ruled that he would have three years of golf eligibility he was now a member of the Baylor team.Hobby admits , It took a while for me to work off the rust that had settled on my swing. I didnt play much golf when I was a part of the basketball team at UH, but in spring of 1989 something clicked while I was practicing with the golf team and I started hitting it really well. That was the momentum that took me to the win at the Public Links Championship and changed my golf life forever.In the years since he played in the Masters some of the details have faded, but one moment stands out from that week that forged an attitude that Hobby hopes he can share as he works to help his students. Duke Butler an icon in the Houston Golf Association took Hobby under his wing as a junior player and now had traveled to Augusta to caddy for his former junior star. Butler was well known by nearly every tour player from his days as Executive Director of the Houston Open so on Wednesday morning as they went to get set to play in the par-3 tournament Butler was very busy catching up with so many old friends.Hobby noticed that Byron Nelson was sitting on a bench next the first tee greeting everyone as they came to start their round. While Hobby was waiting for Butler to catch up he moved over and sat down at the end of the bench just to get close to a true legend of the game. After a few moments Hobby coughed up the courage to extend his hand to Nelson, Mr. Nelson, Im Tim Hobby. Before he could get out another word Nelson interrupted, I know who you are son. I know all the good players in Texas. Nelson continued,Son, do you have a game today? Hobby couldnt speak so Nelson followed, You just sit here. Ill get you a good game. Hobby sat there watching one group after another tee off. All the greats were there, but Nelson would only nod at his young Texas friend as player after player approached, Not yet, you dont want to play with them. Nelson didnt offer his bench partner until Gary Player and David Frost came to shake Nelsons hand and then he spoke up, Gary, David, this is Tim Hobby from Texas and hes going to play with you today. Except for the confidence that Player gave Hobby as they played and words of encouragement from the South African, he doesnt remember any particular shot only that he had a hard time keeping his feet on the ground. It was just another out-of-body experience at Augusta National. While he didnt make the cut that week it was one heck of a dream come true. Like the commercial says-Priceless!After graduating from Baylor, Hobby did what most top college players dream of doing, he tried Q-School and a shot at the PGA Tour. He won the first stage twice, but lost in the second stage five years in a row sometimes by a little as just a couple strokes. To make ends meet the young professional took his game to as many mini-tour events as possible. And with references from some of the best golf instructors in the world like Dick Harmon and Jim Flick, Hobby took some teaching jobs in Detroit and at Desert Mountain in Arizona. While these teaching jobs helped pay the bills he was still trying to find a way onto the Tour. This wasnt turning out to be the life he wanted to share with his new wife Darcy who he had met while playing at Baylor. They were married in 1992 and he promised his bride that he would give his quest for the PGA Tour the next five years. It was almost exactly five years later when the coaching job at Baylor was open.Hobby was a natural for the job. A graduate of Baylor and one of their top players, he had earned All-American honors his last year and in spite of the fact that he was asked to take the reins of a golf program that was ranked 130, he agreed to take the job. He was excited. Hobbys first recruiting class included local great, Jimmy Walker and within the next four years the Baylor golf program rose to a top 20 ranking which included a Big-12 Championship in 2001.That was all it took for Hobby to know he really loved the teaching element of the game and while he continued to play his own game he worked to become a Class A, PGA Professional. Helping other golfers enjoy the game has become a great rewarding bonus for the player who in 1989 was just a little bit nervous when he put the tee in the ground after being introduced in front of what he felt had to be 20,000 fans watching the action at the first hole at The Masters.With all the personal achievements that he has garnered as a coach and player he has earned the right to display a lot of trophies in his office, but there are only two framed items and that tells you a lot about the humble character of Tim Hobby. One is an 8x10 of the Baylor Big-12 Championship Team and the other is a framed scorecard from one of his top students, T. J. Schultz who proudly presented Hobby with his scorecard after shooting 32 at the U.S. Kids National Championship- as a seven-year old.There are days when he misses the College game and coaching, but he knows he made the right decision to leave Baylor and set up shop at The Club at Sonterra. Every day when he opens his office door immediately to the left, on the wall, is Schultzs scorecard with a handwritten note from the young player, Thank You, Mr. Hobby.Hobby is waiting for the day when all this will go full circle, the day when one of his students will qualify for the Masters. One thing is certain however, Hobby will be more than happy to extend his hand and offer some insight and instill some confidence. You can bet he will volunteer to caddy and you might even find him holding a spot for his player on the same wooden bench at the Par-3. Hobby's Students Coleman and Navarro Named Rolex Junior All-AmericansAJGA Insider, Volume 3, Issue 12, December 8, 2011Each year, 48 boys and 48 girls receive the prestigious honor of being named a Rolex Junior All-American. At the Rolex Junior All-America Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic invitational tournament at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in November, 2011, Taylor Coleman was named to the Rolex Junior All-America Honorable Mention Team and Marijosse Navarro made the Rolex Junior All-America Second Team.
